Year of the Veteran Quarterback

With the NFL combine in Indianapolis currently taking place, it's easy to focus on the plethora of youth that is about to enter the league, but even so, this off-season appears to have an aging theme: It's the year of the veteran quarterback. There's some here, there's some there, there's some everywhere. It started with Drew Bledsoe, who got the boot from the [read more...]

Interview w/ White Sox, Cubs Beat Writers Scot Gregor, Paul Sullivan

Courtesy of Exile in Wrigleyville Just as baseball players train year-round and no longer use spring training to round into shape, baseball beat writers no longer use it to reacquaint themselves with their sources after a winter away. Off-season player moves have become big news to fans and fantasy players hungry to see where all the big names will end up [read more...]

Kansas Hoops: Top of the Class in High School Recruiting

Despite the recent slide in the performance of the Kansas hoops team, there is hope for the future. The Jayhawks lost their third straight game on Monday, which had not previously occurred since 1994. This is a veteran dominated team that starts three seniors, all of whom have futures in the NBA. But these players were Roy Williams' recruits and [read more...]

Manhood It Is Not For Yanks’ Giambi

Good news, men. The price of manhood is falling. Last week, it was Jason Giambi admitting to the press that he could not in fact, tell a lie. Ah, manhood. Admitting ones mistakes. To a grand jury. Under oath. Facing federal prosecution for perjury. Yes, here is the personification of man. Your exhales are feminine, Marlboro man. Go get a pedicure, [read more...]

NBA All-Star Weekend? More Like Month

Is it over yet? Can I stop cringing? Surprisingly, there has been more than one protracted painful exhibition in the sports world this week so I guess I better clarify. I'm talking about the NBA's All-Star Month, which has hopefully ended by now. What used to be a meeting of basketball's prime players in a mid-season friendly has now turned into one of [read more...]

A Wirtzism; The Rebuilding of the Blackhawks

In less than two hours, after the cancellation of the NHL season was announced by Commissioner Gary Bettman this Wednesday, Feb. 16, Blackhawks owner Bill Wirtz sent a letter to the fans who once crowded the corridors of the United Center. Just like a letter to a friend, he shared his feelings of disappointment and related his deep appreciation and [read more...]

Gillespie: NBA All-Star Game A “Coin Flip”

Bookies are the moderators. Public 'square' bettors and the professionals are the competitors. This is the formula for regular season NBA betting. For the NBA All-Star Game, however, the professionals are largely taken out of the equation. For this game and other all-star events like it, it is usually the public alone going against the bookie and his skewed line. The [read more...]

Sosa Leaves Collectible Gap In Chicago

When Sammy Sosa packs his bags and heads to Baltimore for the 2005 MLB season, he'll be taking a huge chunk of the Chicagoland collectibles market with him. Chicago fans are pretty finicky, being used to having icons to collect. You would be too, if players such as Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Gale Sayers, Walter Payton, Ernie Banks, Bobby Hull, Stan [read more...]

Should Clutch Hitting Stats Affect Personnel Decisions?

This question occurred to me a couple of weeks ago when I tuned into WGN news to watch the sports report. What caught my attention was Cub GM Jim Hendry saying that Jeremy Burnitz batted .307 with runners in scoring position last year to support Burnitz's signing (actually that was with runners on base while he batted .287 with runners [read more...]

Hard Shot Cancels NHL Season

At 99.8 miles per hour, Chicago Blackhawk prospect Rene Bourque's shot sliced into the net during the AHL Skills Competition in Manchester, New Hampshire, and that is how fast reality hit home when the season was cancelled this Wednesday, Feb. 16. The shot hit right in the crease without a save for the 2004-2005 NHL season from league Commissioner Gary Bettman. In [read more...]
