Basic Rules of Online Blackjack

Most blackjack games are one player against the dealer, although it is possible to play a multi player game. The goal is to get closer to 21 than the dealer, without going over.

If the player goes over, he “busts” and loses his bet even if the dealer also subsequently goes over. Aces are worth one or 11, face cards 10, all others their face value. If a player does not like the total of his first two cards after seeing the dealer’s exposed up card, he can “hit” and get an additional card.

He can hit as many times as he wants until he goes over. When he is happy with his total, he may “stand.” A player can also “double,” doubling his bet and receiving one additional card to his first two, or “split” if the two cards are the same rank. If he splits, he puts up an extra bet and each card becomes the basis of a new hand.

If a player is dealt blackjack (21 on two cards), he instantly gets 3-to-2 on his money unless the dealer also has blackjack, in which case no one wins. If the dealer has an ace showing, he may offer insurance. A player who takes insurance puts up an additional half bet and is paid 2-to-1, resulting in a break-even hand, if the dealer has blackjack.

If the player has blackjack and wants insurance, he automatically gets 1-to-1 on his hand instead of 3-to-2. Insurance is a bad bet and should not be taken.
