Rooting for the Real Stephen A. Smith
Tomorrow is Stephen A. Smith’s last day at ESPN. On his website Smith says: “While my love for sports has never dissipated– of course, I’ll never let go of sports– my desire to venture beyond sports into the world of news, politics and entertainment has grown.” Smith seems to look to follow similar paths of former ESPN talking heads Robin Roberts and Keith Olbermann. He says: “My aspiration [read more...]
Milton Bradley Can’t Stop The Racism
Milton Bradley is waiting for a hearing on his appeal of a two-game suspension issued by Major League Baseball after he argued a called third strike by home plate umpire Larry Vanover on April 16. Milton Bradley says: “I’m just not into negativity,”… “I can see already I’m going to be that guy that since nothing else is going on in here — ‘We’re [read more...]
Panic?: Big Papi, Chien-Ming Wang, & Ron Leflore
Yes, it’s only been two weeks, and I hate to be a party to premature panic, but… 1) What’s Up With Big Papi? All of a sudden David Ortiz can’t turn on a fastball. Hmmm. Says Dan Shaughnessy: “These are uncharted waters for Big Papi. He’s lived a charmed life in Red Sox Nation. He is the sultan of swing and he’s earned his [read more...]
The REAL Fight of the Century: Jeanette vs. McVey
It was clearly “the fight of the century”. Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier I in 1971? Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling in 1938? Jack Johnson vs. Jim Jeffries in 1910? Nope. You would have to go back even one more year to April 17, 1909 exactly 100 years ago. That was when two of history’s greatest heavyweights named Joe Jeanette and Sam McVey faced off [read more...]
“Manilla”: HBO’s Hit Job on Muhammad Ali
In general, HBO brings the very best that sports coverage has to offer. Bryant Gumbel’s “Real Sports” is clearly the best sports show on television, HBO regularly produces excellent sports documentaries, and it has recently made a point to bypass pay-per-view in showing many high quality fights. Having stated that: This weekend’s HBO documentary ”Thrilla in Manila” was an awful piece of journalism. [read more...]
Basketball HOF; Sexism; T.O., Yanks, and Marvin
I’ve been a bit preoccupied lately, and missed on at least six articles that I wanted to write. Please excuse me while I just quickly unload on some topics worthy of longer analysis. 1A) Old White Coaches Hall of Fame: Congrats to MJ, John Stockton, David Robinson, Jerry Sloan, and Vivian Stringer — all no-brainers. Too bad my man Bernard got snubbed again. Dennis [read more...]
Dana White’s Sexist Tirade: A “Teachable Moment”
After an 8-second warm-up, the video takes off: “Loretta, you fucking moron”. Here are some lines from the next three minutes: “just to show you how fucking dumb you are” “you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about” “shut the fuck up” “everything that comes out of your mouth is fucking stupid” “Hey Loretta… you fucking moron” (again) “you fucking dumb bitch” “Fuck you Loretta Hunt” (while raising [read more...]
