Bears Add Another Pisa to the Puzzle?

Recently, the Chicago Bears picked up Pisa Tinoisamoa.  Pisa was the Rams’ leading tackler last year and was considered to be the best member of their defense.

While I don’t think that linebacker was a “need” position, I do think that the Bears upgraded their defense significantly from this signing. To give those who are unaware of Pisa an idea of how good he is, we can look back to his rookie season when Lovie Smith was his defensive coordinator.

That year he played in all 16 games and finished the season with 76 tackles, two sacks and three interceptions. Last year he had 107 tackles (88 solo), 3 sacks, and 2 pass defensed. He is apparently under-sized for the new Ram’s coaching regime and was cut by the team. This move easily gives the Bears the best LB core in all of the NFL. We now have three legit Pro Bowl caliber players at the position now.

In other news:

The Plaxico Burress rumors have reached a roar lately at Halas Hall. Just a couple of weeks ago, Jerry Angelo insinuated that Burress was not on his radar. Now, the media is stirring up the rumor mill again. Normally, Chicagobears.com’s Larry Mayer pushes down any and all of these type of rumors.

Normally, Mayer tows the company line and says “Devin is our receiver” or something to that effect. But on June 1st this was written on Mayer’s Chalk Talk

“Do you think the Bears should pursue a veteran wide receiver like Anquan Boldin or Plaxico Burress? I think they may be that one player away from winning a championship.

It’s been widely reported that the Bears inquired about possibly trading for Anquan Boldin during the draft. There doesn’t seem to be much chance of a deal happening at this point.

Personally, I would rather see the Bears pursue Plaxico Burress [assuming he’s permitted to play this season if and when his legal issues are resolved]. Can you imagine putting a receiving threat likeBurress on a Bears offense with Jay Cutler, Matt Forte, Devin Hester and Greg Olsen?

Burress is scheduled to appear in court June 15 and could face the possibility of at least three and a half years in jail for carrying an unlicensed firearm. I’m no legal expert, but I don’t understand why the punishment could be so severe. I’m not condoning what he did—allegedly carrying a loaded unlicensed gun and accidentally shooting himself in the leg.

But to me, it was a lapse in judgment and not a heinous criminal act. You often hear about athletes receiving a much less severe punishment after assaulting someone, pointing a gun at someone or injuring someone while driving drunk. To me, those transgressions are far worse than whatBurress allegedly did.”

I was shocked to see this. Larry Mayer usually does a good job of dampening expectations. And word is, the Bears players are getting in on the mix.

Devin Hester said ”I feel pretty comfortable with what we have here right now,” Hester said. ”If we added Plaxico Burress, that’s only going to build confidence even more. Why wouldn’t he help us?”

Not to mention, it’s been rumored Jay Cutler is texting the former Giants wide receiver as well. As for my thoughts on this, I agree the Burress would be a huge upgrade and allow Hester to run free and wild. I think that adding him would make us favorites to make the Superbowl and would envision a 14 win season.

With that being said, I won’t get my hopes up. First of all, he has an array of issues to get worked out both with the State of New York and with RogerGoodell. There is a slim chance that Burress will play more than 8 games this year. if at all. Secondly, despite what has gone on in this offseason, we are still The Chicago Bears.

The organization is known for being cheap and not allowing problem players in their locker room. Remember that Cedric Benson and Tank Johnson? These two were great (ok, Benson was just good) players for us and we cut them because of legal issues.

I think as fans we may have gotten too greedy. Think back to six months ago. We had a serviceable but not Pro Bowl worthy QB, a shotty offensive line, a defense that was going unchanged, and all we had is a hope that a superstar would have fall our way in the draft.

Now when I search the internet, all I see is fans complaining that we don’t have a WR for Cutler to throw to. I for one am perfectly fine with what we have. Adding more would make me happy but I still think a deep run in the playoffs this year would be easy with the pieces we have in place.

Also, to make this already long post longer. Word is is that Hester and Cutler are developing quite a rapport with one another.  In OTA’s Devin caught a beautiful long ball in stride down the sideline for a touchdown. No matter what more happens in this offseason, I look for that connection to one us Bears fans see for a very long time to come.

And P.P.S. Suddenly, the Favre-Vikings talk has gotten very quiet. Makes me wonder what is going on when even the media can’t drum up a thing about his comeback.
