Bowden to retire

I remember January of 1983, when, shortly after my alma mater, PSU, won the national championship (I was a senior and was STILL celebrating) Bear Bryant passed away. The Bear was 69 but looked older. Apparently his body felt the same way. He got to enjoy about four weeks…maybe less…of retirement. Tomorrow Bobby Bowden will announce his retirement at the age of 80. [read more...]

Talk about extremes.

In the past week we discussed the alpha and omega of the long P.A. career of Bob Sheppard. How’s this for another kind of Beginning and End? The Nets fired Lawrence Frank this week after an 0-16 start to this NBA season. Do you remember how Frank began his tenure? By winning 13 in a row. Talk about extremes. …and apparently it’s now official. Charlie Weis [read more...]

For a complete list since 1954, go here. Update, 11/30, 7:45 p.m.: Before the confirmation, I had a question mark at [read more...]

But from 6-2 to 6-6 (and you know what I think about 6-6 teams going to bowl games…they shouldn’t). It looks like ND is now searching for a new coach…with a LOT of money still to be paid out [read more...]

This year’s HOF ballot

Chad Jennings gives his take on the LoHud blog, here is mine: An X symbolizes who I would vote for if I had a vote. I believe voters can vote for up to 10. I choose seven. The full list of candidates Roberto Alomar X Kevin Appier Harold Baines Bert Blyleven X Ellis Burks Andre Dawson X Andres Galarraga Pat Hentgen Mike Jackson Eric Karros Ray Lankford Barry Larkin X Edgar Martinez Don Mattingly Fred McGriff X Mark [read more...]

Sheppard…the alpha and the omega

Thanks to Mike F. for his response (see the comment on the previous post). From LoHud’s Chad Jennings we get the beginning, and from Mike we get the end of  Bob Sheppard’s remarkably long run as the Yankees P.A. announcer. Let me recap. The Beginning, April 17, 1951 (H) signifies Hof, (M) MVPs (with # won) The 1951 Yankees went on to win the World Series over the [read more...]
