Gardner compared to…

The Brett Gardner bashing that I see on various sights is amazing. Gardner, 26, has 150 games and 425 AB under his belt—about the equivalent of one season. .256-3-39 with 39 SB in 45 attempts. He won’t hit for power. Speed and defense are his game. Yankees fans, when looking at LF for 2010, are a bit spoiled. Of course we’d all like to see [read more...]

Byrd to Cubs, and 35 years ago today, things started to change

Just my luck. I took my last vacation days of the year to be with family at Christmastime that I hadn’t seen in a while. With two days left in the year, I get sick. No work, no pay. Rats. As I recover, I remember what happened 35 years ago today. Catfish Hunter, on 12/31/74, signed a free-agent deal with the [read more...]

How much, really, can be added?

I will always give blogs and stories credit where and when I see a really good one. Like today. Rob Neyer responds, and quite well, to a blog by Rob Cameron. If you have a 100 win team as presently constructed in your state of mind, how much $$$$$$ (read, Boras, Damon, Holliday or whatever), do you want to spend in order [read more...]

Mets finally land Bay

After sitting on the offer for weeks, Jason Bay finally agreed to terms with the Mets. I wonder if it’s because he had to. There was word that outside of Boston and the Mets, that there were no other offers out there. Are some players pricing themselves too high? Bay wanted a five-year deal. He gets four years at $66M with [read more...]

I don’t know where this came from…

Recently I heard and read some Jermaine Dye talk regarding the LF situation for the Yanks—which I immediately dismissed. The question is, how did it come up in the first place? For one thing, Dye turns 36 next month, meaning he is just 10 weeks or so younger than Johnny Damon. Dye has played 27 games in LF in his career, as opposed to [read more...]

Ugly NFL words right now…need help

It’s terrible when your playoff berth isn’t decided by yourself. As a Steelers fan, I’m aware of those ugly words…need help. Not only do the Steelers have to beat Miami next week, they need help. How much help? Consider that the Steelers must win then one of these has to happen. 1. The Texans and Jets both lose or tie. 2. The Texans and Ravens [read more...]

Meyer now “Indefinite Leave of Absence”; Colts beaten

Now it appears like Urban Meyer won’t resign, but will take an indefinite leave of absence. Which means what? No recruiting trips, no spring practice but back in the fall of 2010? Only he knows. Hmmm, Giants Stadium will be blown up soon as the Giants enter a new home next year. The way the Giants got blown out today (and playoff [read more...]
