For the sake of one second…and one point.

By: Mike Sommer

So it looks like Texas vs. Alabama for the college football title. (Sorry undefeated TCU, Cincinnati and Boise St.)

For the sake of one second…a huge upset could have been. Colt McCoy (who probably lost the Heisman to Ingram last night) rolls out and seeing no one, fires the ball away. After review, it is determined that one second remained when the ball hit. Too close for comfort but enough time for a 46-yard FG attempt to save the Longhorn’s dreams of a national title. Down 12-10, the kick is made and Texas squeaks by Nebraska 13-12.

In another big game yesterday, it looked like Cincinnati’s undefeated season would end. Down 31-10, the Bearcats battled back to tie, only to see Pitt score a TD with under two minutes left. Pitt, however, botched the XP snap and I thought “uh-oh, that just gave Cincy an opening to save a dream season.” Sure enough, it only took Cincy four plays to march down the field…and they did not botch the extra point. 45-44 Cincinnati.

For the sake of one second and/or one point…

Cincinnati remains undefeated, but as for their coach…

Rumors are that ND will name their new coach today. Oklahoma’s Stoops says no. Urban Meyer has a nice gig at Florida and I’d be shocked if he left FLA for ND. Cincy’s Kelly? Maybe, but I think that to be fair to his team and the university, that Kelly—if he has ND aspirations at all—should concentrate on one thing and one thing only. An undefeated season for Cincinnati and a top-five ranking. To take the ND job now would cause too many distractions and give a lame-duck coach. There already may be distractions. But as to adding fuel to fire—best not.
