Funny how you don’t know…one man’s taste isn’t anothers…

First off, a baseball bit. Melvin Mora to the Rockies. I worked, so I missed the Grammys. I see Kings of Leon won record of the year. Just to show you a) that I’m getting old (I am 48) or b) one man’s taste isn’t anothers… Besides, when I watch the Grammys now, I usually like only about 25-33% of the show, anyway. I saw [read more...]

A late free agent signing; and no, it isn’t JD

Orlando Cabrera signed a 1-yr., $3M contract with the Reds, with an option for 2011. Cabrera, 35, split last year between the A’s and Twins, hitting a combined .284-9-77, 13 sB and and OPS+ of 86. For his career, he is a .275 hitter, 162 ga. ave. of 11 HR, 71 RBI and 18 SB. OPS+ 86. He has been with the Expos, [read more...]

Eagle great Brookshier dies at 78.

Before there was Summerall and Madden, there was Summerall and Brookshier. Both became broadcasters after their football careers, and Summerall and Brookshier were fabulous back in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. Brookshier died last night at the age of 78 from cancer. He was a DB for the Eagles 1953, 1956-1961. He had to retire at the age of 30 when [read more...]

JD leaves the door open for a return.

I don’t know what the market price for him would be in the future, but the NY Post reports that JD hasn’t shut the door on the Bronx. The Post also had it’s weekly minor/winter league report. One of those commented on was switch-pitcher Pat Venditte. One guest post over at LoHud commented on Venditte this week also. According to him, Venditte is two [read more...]

Signings, and another minor league catching prospect for the Yankees.

Jose Veras signed a minor league deal with Florida. Last year he was cut by the Yanks and Indians. Eric Byrnes signs with the Mariners. More talk on MLBTR about the Yanks still discussing minor league deals with possibly Thames, Gomes and Baldelli. Financially, they probably are tapped out and minor league deals would be it. Interesting post by Chad Jennings at LoHud. [read more...]

Kurt Warner retires at age 38.

3 Super Bowls, of which he holds #1, #2 and #3 for passing yards in a Super Bowl. Super Bowl 34 MVP for “The Greatest Show on Turf.” 2 NFL MVP awards. 5 Pro Bowls. Took two franchises out of the doldrums to a Super Bowl. Most amazingly, a story fit for a movie. From Northern Iowa, to undrafted, to stocking shelves, Arena Football to [read more...]

Jays looking at Damon? Delgado?

MLB.com today had a post stating that Toronto, looking for some star power after trading Halladay to the Phils, could be looking at Damon or Delgado. As for JD, I wonder. At 36, reliant on his legs, and with Astroturf up in Toronto, I don’t think it would help him. I think it would hurt him and accelerate the decline.  With Overbay [read more...]

From Mike Cummings, Sponsor Services/Play Ball Manager of the SWB Yankees: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees have started auctioning off their 2009 game used jerseys on EBAY. Right now we have 10 listed but more will be added daily. Currently, fans can bid on players like Alfredo Aceves, Francisco Cervelli and Edwar Ramirez – all members of the World Champion team as well. This is [read more...]

An ultimatum by Winn?

Apparently the $2m/yr. OF gave the Yanks an ultimatum, for Winn had an offer on the table from the Nats. The Yanks moved. Whether Damon would have lowered his demands, who knows (most likely not) but when Winn told the Yanks to make a decision or not, it was goodbye Johnny. Most don’t think either side would have budged. I did read where some [read more...]
