Classic sees Canada win hockey gold in OT; Yanks DFA Edwar
I wish I could have seen it rather than be at work. With just 24 some seconds left, the goalie pulled for an extra attacker and the host country, Canada, ready to celebrate, the USA tied the gold-medal hockey game 2-2. But in OT, 22 year old Sidney Crosby, already one of, if not the best, player in the NHL, scored to give [read more...]
What, they didn’t deserve it?
Was out last night and conversation turned to the Yankees. The other party, a Phillies fan, brought up the usual, old and worn out statement that the Yanks should win it every year because of the payroll. (Although, to be fair, he was dead accurate in his knowledge of the Yanks-KC A’s pipeline of the 1950s). I pointed out that yes, CC, Burnett [read more...]
Forgetting some games…
In today’s Post, Steve Serby writes about the possibility of the Super Bowl coming to the Meadowlands in 2014 and mentions some, shall I put it, “Cold Weather Classics.” The Ice Bowl being one of them. In the article and a sidebar following, some classic games are forgotten. In 1982, the Freezer Bowl AFC Championship Game between Cincinnati and SD. Cincy 27, SD 7. The 1948 [read more...]
Looking ahead. What’s the 2011 priority?
We just saw the news…or lack of…regarding Derek Jeter. It’s pretty much a given that Derek and Mo aren’t going anywhere but will retire as Yankees and even though Rivera is 40, that time doesn’t seem to be soon. So after 2010, what happens? Jeter and Rivera get locked up to new contracts. At what rates? The current rates, or will [read more...]
Are Mets phasing out Carlos Beltran?
Got to agree.
In case you are wondering, I took a day today. It’s been snowing all day and I didn’t want to take a chance. It isn’t sticking, and I probably could have gone in, but forecasts were for maybe a foot of snow from Thursday morning through Friday with very heavy winds coming later Thursday night. I don’t know about you, but I believe [read more...]
The first Spring Training Live BP. Wear some armor?
Always interesting, the first live batting practice of spring training. Sometimes for the batters, it isn’t fun. The pitchers are still trying to find their control and a few of their pitches may unintentionally come too far inside. Ouch. Armor alert. Then there are the callouses that need to be formed, hands to toughen up. Not to mention some of those inside fastballs off the [read more...]
Make Me Smile
I could be humming the old Chicago tune all night, based on this from Chad Jennings at LoHud: The Jesus Montero show continues. Today he hit one over the batter’s eye in center field. Based on where the balls landed, I don’t think he made an out during his first eight swings in the cage: Double to the right-center gap, single [read more...]
Fast cutting.
I watching the Olympics tonight and see a bobsled run. How would you like to be the TV director? For the bobsled is going, what… 80 MPH? So I counted the cameras and cuts from the start of the run to the bottom. The bobsled ran the course in 53.19 seconds. …and in that time, I counted 25 or 26 cuts. 25 [read more...]
Could this player decide the 2010 AL East?
Gordon Estes has an article on Big Papi, David Ortiz, over on ESPN.com. Good article, for which David Ortiz shows up in 2010? Ortiz is 34, certainly within range of a “bounceback.” For 2009, he only hit .238, but still had 28 HR and 99 RBI. OPS+ 101. The year before, it was .264-23-89 in 109 games. OPS+ numbers over the past [read more...]
