John Wall’s Very Special Visitor
While everyone else is either in the dark or straight fabricating stories - I won’t name names, cough cough Andrew Katz of Dime Magazine… damn did I just write that?… here is the real deal on prized high school recruit, John Wall and the latest on his recruiting experience….
…and the real deal on the moves of someone very special in the NCAA hoops world.
Now, before everyone starts tripping about my mentioning Katz, the following is what Katz either misunderstood, had editor problems with, or fabricated:
Though Wall spent time with Coach K today, and will end up visiting Miami this weekend, the top prospect is expected to be leaning towards the Wildcats.
As charismatic as Krzyzewski might be - and Wall’s confidant Brian Clifton indicated that he laid out an incredibly impressive speech to the Wall family - the results in recent years speak for themselves.
Now, the truth is Clifton was impressed with coach K —————- during Clifton and Wall’s January visit to Duke.
The pair was scheduled to return to K-ville early this week, but the visit was cancelled. What remained on the John Wall Sweepstakes schedule was an official trip to the University of Miami, as I reported Wednesday. Now, where Katz received his misinformation is anyone’s guess, but he and Brian Clifton absolutely did not discuss recent visit by Clifton and Wall to Duke.
But.
Someone did visit Wall and his mother, Frances Pulley.
It is widely known in North Carolina’ ”Golden Triangle” of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill that D-One Sports owner Brian Clifton, whose company also fields an AAU hoops team, has, shall we say, a certain distaste for UNC head coach Roy Williams and new Kentucky head coach John Calipari.
However, under the guise of visiting Word of God forward, C.J. Leslie (who previously verbally committed to NC State), Coach Cal - Coach K’s polar opposite in almost every discernible way), wrangled John Wall away from Clifton, Wall’s near-contsant companion in the recruiting process, and met with the Word of God High School point guard and his mother.
According to reliable sources, Calipari, in his extended discussion with Wall and Frances Pulley, laid the college hoops landscape bare. When the subjects of the University of Florida and Duke were broached, Calipari pulled no punches. For Florida, all one needs to do is look at the relationship between Nick Saban - as articulated by Saban - and new Alabama hoops head coach Anthony Grant. As for Duke, let’s just say no one player is bigger than the program.
The only difference between Grant and Donovan is, Billy D. earns about $3 million a year and has not produced a team that has played in the Big Dance the past two seasons. And Donovan knows that Florida can procure the services of a head coach who will fail to reach the NCAA Tourney for far less than Donovan’s present salary.
As for the North Carolina faithful, they must surely be wondering why Roy Willams has not performed a similar end run around Clifton in an attempt to woo Wall to UNC. With Ty Lawson headed to the NBA, Williams is left without a point guard near the abilities of Lawson. In 2010 Williams will have explosive point guard, 6′3″ Kendall Marshall of Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia to run his team. But for now Williams is most likely looking at starting Larry Drew II, who, at present, in nowhere near the talent of Wall, or Marshall for that matter.
However, in a press conference Thursday to announcing Ty Lawson’s and Wayne Ellington’s intentions to leave UNC for the pros, Williams was indirectly asked abut Wall:
Q: …you have an open scholarsip coach, what will you do?
Williams: Well, we’ll have to wait and see.
The only two UNC-quality high school players in America left for Williams to recruit are 6′10″ Renardo Sidney Fairfax High School in Los Angeles and Wall. Sidney is said to be leaning toward signing with Southern California or heading to Europe as has high school junior, Jeremy Tyler.
So guess who that leaves Roy ‘waiting and seeing’ about?
In the end, though, unless Williams makes a direct plea to Wall and his mother and makes it soon, John Wall well could end up wearing “Lexington Blue” and being fawned over by Ashley Judd from November 2009 through late March and perhaps the first even Monday in April 2010. Because as we saw at Memphis and as we are seeing so far at Kentucky, what John Calipari wants, John Calipari usually gets.

I wonder if he called Kobe and Lebron…if he did, Calipari has no chance to land him.

B***S***, I love Coach Cal, especially now that he is manning the preeminent NCAA basketball program in the country. I told John Wall that he needs to play for Cal in order to get to the league.

John’s a tremendous talent and would fit in very well with the intellectual student body at Duke University. As far as breaking him of bad habits, I think all he has to do is learn how to slap the floor with both hands. Then, he’s a Dookie.

I think John would fit in nicely with the intellectual student body at Duke University. Even more, he doesn’t appear to have any bad habits that I would have to break for him. In fact, I would only have to teach him how to slap the floor with both hands for him to be a real Dukie. Think Wojo (as Wayne Turner drives by him repeatedly).

This is wrong on so many levels. Just a few things to get started. first, clifton and wall sat down with K the last week in March. Second, Kendall Marshall is not explosive. He’s probably the 7th or 8th ranked PG in his class. As a junior he was 3rd team DC all-Metro; not spectacular for a kid going to UNC.

Apparently…You are wrong DWIL…
Wall met with Coach K via satellite or over the phone because he got held up in NYC.
Calipari is a mad man and he’s on a roll…After it’s all said and done, he’ll have more former players in the NBA than Krzyzewski ever thought about.
and that is simply b/c UK’s academic standards aren’t as high.
and b/c he can sell a ketchup popsicle to a woman wearing white gloves.

Cal certainly has the right to smear the names of Coach K, Billy Donovan and Roy Williams, afterall, he’s never done anything sketchy to land recruits. Remember how he got the Memphis players jobs at FedEx where they didn’t even work, but were just paid? Heck, most of the time, Fed Ex had never seen the players, they just stroked them checks. Cal is so dirty that he smells like New Jersey.

Kansas was placed on NCAA probation because of violations committed during Williams’ era at Kansas. The NCAA cited in its report that graduating players received cash and clothing while Williams was coach. Because of those violations, the University of Kansas remains on probation until October of this year.
Comment by Miles Brand on April 24, 2009
Calipari is a slimeball going around trashing other coaches, what else is new? Hopefully John sees through the lies and comes to a respectable program with a respectable coach in Duke. Hell, I’d rather see him at NC State or Miami than playing for that scumbag.
And John Wall and K met a few weeks ago. Check your facts. That’s what Katz was referring to.
Comment by Steveo on April 24, 2009
I wish Wall would call up Lebron, Kobe, Chris Paul, etc. and ask them about Coach K. They will tell you nothing but great things about the guy, it sure as hell looked like they loved the guy by the gestures they made putting all of those gold medals around his neck and giving him hugs, pouring water on his head etc.
This is an obvious attmept to hate on Duke and Coach K’s success. Good job but I am not buying it.

Coach K didn’t blow him off for a book signing. He did a couple book promotions that day then went to speak at West Point. I’m not even a journalist and I can put the facts together better than these guys. This is why journalism is dying. Plus, nobody knows what really happened that day. And they’ll be meeting each other again in 6 days.

The national exposure of UNC versus Duke twice a year is bigger than anything Wall will ever get at Kentucky.
Next, look at the success of UNC alums in the NBA versus Duke’s.
If Wall likes UNC, the fact is, UNC would do more for him than Duke or Kentucky would.

for every Shane Battier-like honor student, Krezzooskee has a couple of dozen players with academic credentials more in line with schools like Kentucky; yet he would have you believe their team is a beacon of academic excellence. if this were true, why did former dook football coach Carl Franks go to the A.D. and ask for the same “concessions” for football recruits as K gets in basketball so he could compete in the ACC?

Wait until Kentucky gets the exposure on ESPN next season as UNC and Duke have been getting for years. With Calipari coaching top recruiting classes every year it will be painful for “baby blue” and “other blue” to deal with.
I don’t really think Wall wants to learn how to weave and screen like Roy would expect him to learn and thats exactly why he won’t go to UNC.
As far as NBA exposure, Rondo and Prince have been major components in championship NBA teams and represent Kentucky quite well.

Duke has always been little brother to NC and UK and for some atrocious reason have always felt that they belong. 6 years of consistency does not make a program and Duke has always looked to be a higher class of Kentucky.
The shame lies that Duke and NC did not take advnatge of the Big Blue when it was down and now separation wil commence.
Keep trying, KY basketball is KING and now that we have a COACH. anywhere, anytime, KY wil have an advantage before stepping on the court.

Duke/UNC will pale in comparison to what is to come of UK/UOFL. Pitino and Cal vs Roy and K? Not even a question. If Wall comes to KY he will get to play for the most storied college basketball program in the country and establish himself as the most reveared player of that program for the past 25 years. He will also get to play against UNC, UofL, Tennessee, Indiana, UCONN and Florida…all while competing for a championship along side his buddies, Cousins and Orton. He will be set for life if he were to get injured because Kentucky would embrace him as one of their own. Plus he loves Cal for what he did for Rose and Evans. It’s really a no-brainer…if he chooses another school, he literally has no brain

But you can be jealous all you want i rember that old saying dont hate us beacause we’re beautiful LOL.

LeBron may ‘love’ Cal, but I’m pretty sure he’d endorse CoachK as well. And Kobe still says he regrets not going to play at Duke for a year or two out high school. Doesn’t matter though. Cal at Memphis won a ton of games due to a lack of serious competition. Which he’ll get plus some in the SEC. Comparing what Cal may do to what Coach K already has done isn’t even the same. New name on Cal’s checks mean nothing-still NBAU where ever he is coaching. One and done. Coach K could very well be the first men’s coach to win 1000 games, and you guys think his success doesn’t compare to Cal’s? Why…cause he’s done better the last 3 years? Wow. Most NCAA tournament wins in history-Coach K(only cuz Wooden didn’t coach as many). Most NCAA titles of current coaches? Coach K. WIns, curent coaches? Coach K. Most current players on NBA rosters? Duke. They, on average, make higher than the league average. UK should be worried about their real stars of next year than if they will get Wall. Because if Meeks stays, UK is going to be his team, again. Oh and I believe Henderson isn’t signing an agent yet because he hopes Wall is coming to Durham next year. If he does, G comes back to town and Duke will be the best team next year. A lot of ifs though, especially 6 months before the season starts. Cal lost Henry, he’ll lose Wall, too, only question is to who. Sorry.
Comment by Brian on April 25, 2009
For B. Bradley - UNC has had a basketball program before the 80’s. We won a national title in 1924 (Rupp didn’t start coaching at Kentucky until the 1930-31 season) and in 1957; both years going undefeated. Kentucky formed an organized basketball team in 1903; UNC in 1911. The last time I looked at the scorecard, UNC is only 4 games aways from having the most wins in NCAA history; currently second to Kentucky. Props to Kentucky. You have to give credit where credit is due. With that said, UNC has appeared in more Final Fours than any other school, won more NCAA tournament games than any other school, and is currently tied for third (with Indiana) for having the most NCAA National Championship titles; UCLA with 11 and Kentucky with 7. Again credit to both schools. However, we have put more stars in the NBA, have had more McDonald All-American’s, and have dominated the Atlantic Coast Conference for nearly 40-50 years. No school reaches such high levels of acheivement without years of consistency. Do some homework before making a comment. And John Wall…the kid is definitely talented. But as from the results of this year’s National Champions show, UNC is a team with balanced scoring. It would also be a team next season that he could thrive in, under the leadership of coaches and seniors with CHAMPIONSHIP experience (2 titles in the past 6 years). Calipari is definitely a great coach but hasn’t yet paid his dues. However, I’m sure he will; probably sooner than later. But winning a National Title is a lot of pressure to place on a freshman’s shoulders without the experience of other team members (see Derrick Rose or Michigan’s Fab Five). MJ won a National Title with UNC in 1982, but was not the center-piece. By the way, 4 National titles (UNC) versus 1 (Kentucky) since the 1980’s. The 60’s are over dude!

UNC has the most NBA ready frontline in the country; what a better way to make a point guard shine. Wall goes to UNC, he has a FAR better shot at a title.
Kudos to Mitch for the good data. UK’s balance of “tradition” is heavily weighted from over 30 years ago. You had a good 3 year run in the 90’s, but dook (same # of titles), UNC (more Final Fours), and UNLV (early decade prominence) were all pretty successful, you were hardly “the team”.
Also for the MORON proclaiming Pitino/ Calipari better than Williams/K. How many titles does the Kentucky connection own between them? ONE (and it’s NOT owned by your boy Cal)…Roy and the Rat? SIX…another quick question, which two of the four are in the Hall of Fame?…and finally, how many championships between UK/UL in the past 10 years (you know the years that potential 18 year old recruits actually remember)? ZERO; UNC/ dook have THREE titles in the past ten.
All of UK’s boasts are predicated on hope and hope alone. …and by the way Rose and Evans would have been drafted in the lottery if they played for NJIT, Cal did nothing to boost their stock.

To post 64…”the 60’s are over dude” is a called a “figure of speech”. But from your superior knowledge..I’m pretty sure the Wildcats are glad that the 60’s and 70’s ARE over. No NCAA titles in 20 yrs (’58-’78). WOW!! Thanks for the compliment “Realist” (post 66). Had it not been for Coach Rupp and Coach Haskins, UK would have only posted marginal numbers (BURN). Commenting that UNC being to more Final Fours and having less championships and less wins…Hmmmm…let’s examine.
1)If I’m not mistaken the ACC has been argueably the most dominant conference in college basketball for decades, along with the Big East. Racking up wins would be certainly easy to do in a weak conference…uhhh…like the SEC. (ummmm…”HELLO”…Calipari…Memphis…Conference USA).
B
U
R
N
2)Until the NCAA 64 team tournament expansion in 1985, to make it to the NCAA tournament, you had to win the ACC Tourney. Since 1985, UNC 3 National Titles; UK 2. Apologies for overlooking the ‘98 season. But still…
B B
U U
R R
N N
3) Flourishing in a dribble drive offense…correct…that would play right into Wall’s current game and skill level. Ummmm, wasn’t that Raymond Felton’s and Ty Lawson’s biggest assests also; being able to put the ball on the floor and beat his man off the dribble? (By the way, the word is “because” not “becauce” and “dribble” is spelled with 2 b’s; not “drible”.) But if I may, under Coach Williams, both of those guys developed into more than just one-dimensional players (i.e. better outsied shooting..which Wall is lacking; improved assist to turnover ratios)..and “floor generals”, a.k.a. “leaders”; which is what you want and need from a “true” point guard like someone with the talent of John Wall.
B B B
U U U
R R R
N N N
As much as I hate to agree with “Realist” on this, “the team of the 90’s”…that title belongs to Coach K and the Dookies; especially as far as publicity goes. But again UNC was still in the mix. 2 teams from the ACC, one team from the SEC,seems to validate my arguement even more.
Comment by Mitch on April 26, 2009
Excuse me…let me make a spelling correction of my own…(better outside shooting). Not sure if that would have been caught.
Comment by Mitch on April 26, 2009
All time wins: UK has 1988, UNC has 1984. We’ll just have to wait and see who gets to 2000 first. UNC has gained 30 wins on UK in just 2 years. Personally, I think UNC will be the new leader this time next year.

To the realist-Roy only has 2 titles and K has 3. That’s five. However, since you’re continuing my bash of the idiot thinking Cal and Pitino are somehow better than K and Roy-oh well. Pitino and Cal have 6 combined appearances in the Final Four. Roy has 7. K has 10. Even the final four trips by school favors Duke/UNC over Kentucky/UL (14 Duke, 18 carolina // 13 kentucky, 8 UL). Coach K also has 3 gold medals, but only 1 as a head coach. Still one more than the other 3. The only way to look at it and say Pitino/Cal are more accomplished coaches is to put blinders on.

Wonder if Wall called Lebron? Calipari has no chance?. LMFAO YEA RIGHT!! If Lebron is supposed to tell Wall not to go to UK then why did Lebron just sign T shirts for Cal to give out on Twitter? Coach Cal spoke highly of Lebron just a few days ago. Your full of sh*t on this one. We dont need Wall but Id love to get him just to piss off the rest of the teams that want him. You dont know sh*t about Wall or UK bball. Pull you head out of your *ss and get real!! GO CATS!!!!

UNC is as close as they are going to get to beating UK to 200 wins. They gained 30 games in 2 yrs? So what? That was under NIT Billy G. Those days are over and UK will once again pull away as they school with the most wins. Sorry Turdheel fans. You can hope and dream as much as you want but UK is gonna burst your bubble.
