Headlines for March, 2009
Hoffpauir and Hill Make Opening Day Roster
Lou Piniella made his decisions today on a final roster, at least for position players. It wasn't good news for Paul Bako who had been battling Koyie Hill for the position of backup catcher. I was personally rooting for Hill the whole time, not just because he shares the same last name. Bako was a Cub before and I don't [read more...]
Marmol Loses Closer Job
Kevin Gregg was named as the closer by Lou Piniella today. I guess Marmol didn't lose the job, since he never had it last year. It was Kerry Wood's job, and Marmol will fill the same role this year as he did last. Set up man. At my fantasy baseball draft yesterday the lack of a decision played a big role [read more...]
First Day of Spring
It is the first day of spring, giving us just 17 days until Opening Day 2009. Lou took another step yesterday in solidifying what this team will look like on April 6th. Sean Marshall was officially named the fifth starter following yesterday's game. He did everything he could to earn in giving up only one earned run in fourteen plus [read more...]
Fontenot Projected as Starting Second Baseman
I couldn't be happier. I love Mike Fontenot. A couple years ago I got myself in trouble making the same claim about his former LSU team mate, Ryan Theriot. Yet last year Theriot had pretty much a career year. I am looking for that kind of year from Fontenot. I probably like these guys so much because they are little guys. [read more...]

World Baseball Classic Wednesday Wrap Up
Ted Lilly and Geovony Soto wrapped up first round play in the WBC Wednesday. Lilly threw three innings in a losing effort for the USA. He only gave up one run, a long ball by former Cub Henry Blanco. Soto had just one base hit, but it was a two out bases loaded single in the sixth. He is hitting .375 [read more...]
Piniella Projects Pitching Plan
Lou Piniella has indicated he will pick his Opening Day starter by the end of the week. He isn't giving any hints, but if it isn't Zambrano for the fifth straight year I'll fall out of my chair. He'll be the first Cub since Rick Sutcliffe to start five straight Opening Day games. Any long suffering Cub fan identifies Sutcliffe [read more...]
Carlos Marmol Exits the World Baseball Classic
Chicago Cub Carlos Marmol had a good first outing against the Netherlands. Three strikeouts to retire the side. His second go round was as awful as his first was perfect. He came into the bottom of the eleventh with a one run lead. Two hits, a walk, and an errant pick off attempt, and he is done at the WBC along [read more...]
Marshall Looking Like Fifth Starter
Sean Marshall took another step towards claiming the fifth spot in the rotation today. He pitched a scoreless four innings today, bringing his spring training totals to nine innings pitched, one run allowed. He leads the staff in innings pitched and has the lowest ERA of any of the pitchers projected in the rotation. Samardzija and Gaudin aren't even close in ERA. They have [read more...]
Cubs WBC Saturday Round Up
All four of the Cubs WBC teams were in action today. Three of the four saw action themselves. After four walks in his first game, Kosuke Fukudome managed a hit today in Japan's rout of Korea. His team becomes the first to move on to the next round. Ted Lilly didn't pitch, but USA won a close game against Canada. Geovony Soto [read more...]
