Superstars Recap 13/8/2009

by michaelrobertson on Aug.14, 2009, under Superstars Recap

Hello there and welcome to Superstars recap with the most handsome Pro Wrestling Ponderings writer, me, Michael Robertson. Let’s not dilly daddle, I’ve got a busy day ahead, so on to our first match we go.

1.John Morrison vs. D.H Smith/w Natalya Neidhart.

Ross and Grisham are our commentators as the two announce Smackdown’s main event for this week, John Morrison and CM Punk. The crowd gives a loud pop for Hart Smith, I prefer Tyson Kidd to be honest but oh well. Some chain wrestling begins this match, as J.R does a great job of putting over the young superstars of the WWE, shame about the booker’s not doing the same. The match breaks down to more of a brawling style, John Morrison getting booed for the first time since the Draft. Huge clothesline by DH as we return from the commercial, the Son of my fellow Brit Davey Boy Smith in firm control. Top rope suplex by Hart, but soon after, the comeback begins, as the Friday Night Delight lands a standing moonsault. After a few failed attempts, Starship Pain connects for the 1,2,3!

Winner: John Morrison.

Verdict: ***. Three star match, really impressed by this one, which the crowd were into too. As everyone knows by now, Morrison is one of the few shining examples of the bookers getting a push right, but D.H Smith impressed me too, a big man who can actually have a good match, Vince McMahon’s fantasy of a wrestler.

2.Goldust vs. Sheamus.

The pale as hell Irishman battles the “eccentric” gold covered veteran as Matt Striker and Josh Mathews join us on commentary. Goldust very aggressive in the early goings on, as Sheamus climbs into the crowd for a breather presumably. During the commercial the Irishman has got into control, dropping Goldust knee-first into the steel steps. The fans rally behind Goldust to a shockingly loud degree for a match on Superstars anyway, as he goes for a Big Splash, only to be met with knees. Just an observation, how come Canadian crowds are so much louder than the majority of American ones? Most of Goldust’ makeup has fallen off, a cross body is reversed as Sheamus almost gets the three count. Both men knock each other to the mat with a big boot, as they get up to their feet, Goldust goes for the small package, 1…2…3!

Winner: Goldust.

Verdict: ** ½. Not quite a 3 star match, but you know, it was better than expected. Expect a rubber match between these two in the not so distant future.

I take that every week after the first two matches, we always get a video package of some roster members. This week it’s Kane, ah remember the days where people gave a damn about this guy? Raw Rebound time a.k.a Fast Forward time, read Jerome Cusson’s column to see quite how bad this show has become.

3.Mickie James(c) and Kofi Kingston(c) vs. Carlito and Rosa Mendes.

THIS is our main event? You have got to be kidding me, why not put DH Smith/Morrison as main event for this hot Canadian crowd. You know, treating the Canadian fans well, instead of having a two hour show where the GM buries them constantly. Carlito has a stereotypical Mexican moustache and very messy hair as the two Diva’s go nuts, only for their partners to break them up. Very aggressive style adopted by Carlito as he beats the snot out of Kofi, but the Jamaican connects with some high flying moves, prompting Carlito to tag in Rosa Mendes. Mickie James gets tagged in as a result, as Rosa floors Mickie with a forearm. The two head butt each other, not on purpose I presume, as the men are tagged back in, a amazing springboard by the US Champ to the other side of the ring. Rosa distracts Kofi as he stands on the top rope, giving Carlito time to recuperate. Beautiful cross body by Kingston gets a two count, as Rosa breaks it up. Mickie and Mendes roll to the outside brawling, as Carlito takes his chance connecting with the Backstabber. Carlito pins the US Champ!

Winner: Carlito and Rosa Mendes.

Verdict: **. Decent little tag match, but a horrible idea putting it last on the show as a main event. I must admit, this grumpy heel persona of Carlito is far better than his work as a face, the fact he pinned the US Champ spells good things for him too.

Final Thoughts: Pretty good show, the first match was the best, the second was well, second and the third was the worse. So pretty much the exact opposite of what you want in a card, nevertheless check out the opener, if you’re bored watch the other two, but they aren’t anything particularly special. My name is Michael Robertson, thanks for reading, I’m out of here.

Superstars Recap 6/8/2009

by michaelrobertson on Aug.07, 2009, under Superstars Recap

So welcome friends to the very first Superstars recap written by me, Michael Robertson. Just to give you a brief idea of myself, I’m a 17 year old guy from the U.K and this is my first “writing job”, so don’t be too harsh on me god damn it. Anyway on this night of firsts, I must admit this will also be the very first time for me to watch an episode of Superstars, let’s hope it’s worth the wait.

Our commentators for this match are sadly Michael Cole and Jerry “The King” Lawler, is it just me who would far prefer the Lawler of old, the snivelling, ass kissing one from the 90’s?

1.Santino Marella vs. Chris Masters.

So Santino has turned face, bad decision WWE! Not to dwell on the negative, his opponent is Chris F’N Masters, a guilty favourite of mine if truth be told. He looks in really good shape too, not much of a pop from the fans though sadly. Marella starts the match showing off to the fans far too much for Masters liking, yet the Italian actually gets some offense, before getting the crap knocked out of him via a clothesline. An attempted Masterlock by Marella is easily countered, not going too well for the Italian. Marella starts crying in the middle of the match before staging a comeback, welcome back to the WWE, Masters! Play time’s over though as Masters manages to lock in the Masterlock, this one’s over.

Winner: Chris Masters.

Verdict: * This match was pretty weird, it was some weird comedy match-proper wrestling match hybrid. Don’t go out of your way to see it.

2. William Regal and Paul Burchill/w Katie Lea vs. Tyler Reks and Yoshi Tatsu.

Thankfully a change in commentary as in comes Matt Striker and Josh Mathews, to see the long awaited, highly anticipated reunion of Burchill and Regal! Slow start to the match, the fans really don’t seem to give a crap about any of these guys. Striker seems to be quite the Regal mark, nice to see a ‘E commentator who knows something about wrestling, that isn’t called Jim Ross. Anyone remember when Regal was actually one of the biggest heels in the entire company, as GM of Raw? Look at him now, wrestling in a mediocre tag match to a crowd that doesn’t care. Tatsu gets the hot tag to Tyler Reks, who cleans house and begins to build some momentum. Cross body by Tyler is reversed into a pin by Regal, who steals the win.

Verdict: ** 10 minute match, yet very mediocre. At least my fellow Brits won I guess, that’s a positive for me anyway.

John “Douche Bag” Cena gets to throw the first ball for the Cubs, and then joins in on commentary. Absolutely riveting, but what does this have to do with wrestling again? Oh that’s right, nothing.

3. Rey Mysterio © vs. Mike Knox.

Now we have Grisham and Jim Ross ringside, for this presumably non-title match. I’m pretty sure these two had a feud on Raw last year, didn’t exactly set the world on fire but oh well, for every Jericho/Michaels you ‘gotta have a Mysterio/Knox. First of all, Mike Knox’s beard is freaking awesome, second of all, my favourite WWE superstar, the Mr. Perfect-esque Dolph Ziggler is a special guest on the announcer’s team for this match! Knox starts this match completely dominating the little man, the size advantage clearly coming into play. Knox’s game plan seems to be to keep Mysterio grounded but to no avail as Mysterio floors the big man to the outside. Mysterio with a beautiful drop toe hold though, but he’s floored via a clothesline soon after. Again the big man keeps working on Mysterio’s back, ensuring he can’t use that high flying arsenal. Mysterio fights back though, a bulldog to Knox followed by a springboard drop kick. Shockingly Mike Knox delivers a CROSS BODY to Mysterio, yet still he can’t get the 3 count. The 619 connects, but as Mysterio leaps from the apron Dolph Ziggler attacks him, leading to a DQ. Knox and Ziggler team up on him, but Mysterio escapes, just.

Verdict: ***1/2. One of Mike Knox’s best ever matches in the company, which doesn’t actually say that much. Again Mysterio delivers a good match, I thoroughly believe he’s the 2009 MVP at the moment. He stole the show at No Way Out in the Elimination Chamber, had a brilliant feud with Chris Jericho, great matches every week on Smackdown and he got a good match out of Mike Knox god damn it!

So that’s it from me this week, a so so show that got better with every match, but skip the first two and check out just the main event. I hope the recap wasn’t too bad, leave constructive feedback if you want, my name’s Michael Robertson, see you next week!

WWE Superstars Recap- 7/2/09

by Zack Danielson on Jul.07, 2009, under Superstars Recap, Television Reviews

Welcome to another edition of Zack Danielson’s WWE Superstars Recap. Tonight’s main event goes to Smackdown (YES!), as half of the Unified Tag Team Champions Edge goes one on one against currest World Champion C.M.Punk. Without further of do, let’s get to it!

WWE Superstars 7/2/09

-Quick note, I love the opening theme and video for Superstars

Match #1. Santino Marella vs. Brian Kendrick

-It seems like Santino hasn’t been on Raw for the longest time doesn’t it? There’s a BIG Santino from the crowd to start off. Kendrick takes early control with a knee lift, but a snap mare attempt is countered. Santino grabs a pair of side headlock takeovers, but Kendrick breaks by getting his foot on the bottom rope. Santino gets thrown over the tope rope, attempts to skin the cat, but Kendrick catches him there and takes control with a series of kicks. Kendrick continues to Kendrick smacks Santino around telling him he’s pathetic, but Santino hulks up screaming NO YOU MAKE ME SO MAD! Santino delivers a series of rights but charges into a boot for two when Santino reaches the bottom rope. Santino goes for a rollup, but it is blocked by Kendrick. Kendrick goes for the cover, but Santino reverses into a sunset flip for the pin at 4:08. Afterward Santino offers a handshake after a hilarious celebration, but gets rebuffed. God bless Santino. Match was ok, nothing special

Winner: Santino (via pin at 4:05)*1/2

Match #2. Charlie Haas vs. John Morrison

-It must be Christmas early, cause we get not one, but TWO Smackdown matches on Superstars. Haas gets a cheap shot elbow after they fight into the ropes to take the early edge. Morrison comes backs with a pair of beautiful armdrags, and a dropkick sends Charlie to the floor. Haas comes back to take Morrison legs out from under him landing him face first on the ringsteps. Haas comes back inside with a pair of kicks to the ribs for two, and then locks in a bodyscissors. Morrison comes out of that with a few forearms, and then hits a nice a spin kick. Morrison hits a pele kick, and then a dropkick. Running boot to the face by Morrison, and then a modified swinging neckbreaker connects. Morrison wins after the Starship pain. To me, this was a glorified squash, but still a damn good 3 minute match.

Winner: John Morrison (via pin at 3:07)**1/4

Match #3. Zack “Woo Woo Woo” Ryder vs. Tyler Reks

-With his theme, outfit and persona, Ryder plays the stereotypical douchebag to perfection. For those who don’t know, Reks is a newcomer to ECW, thanks to the new superstar initiative that was invoked this past week. It looks like Reks has a surfer dude gimmick, which could work well. Ryder pushes Reks into the corner, and then grabs a side headlock. Shoulderblock from Ryder, but Reks comes right back with a flap jack. Ryder returns the favor with a strong clothesline on the top rope, and then drives Reks into the top buckle. Ryder grabs a side headlock, and then goes for a back suplex. Reks counters flipping out and hitting a reverse neckbreaker. Ryder gets a faceplant by Reks for a two count, but comes right back with a chin buster. Zack hits the “Zack attack” and gets the three count. Huh, i would of thought the new guy would go over. Maybe Ryder is the new face of ECW. Woo Woo Woo!

Winner: Zack Ryder (via pin at 2:33)*

-Before the main event, we get a video package of the ending to the Punk/Hardy match at The Bash.

Match #4. Non-Title: C.M. Punk (World Heavyweight Champion) vs. “The Rated R Superstar” Edge

-How can somebody be Rated R on a PG Show? Punk is still subtly selling the eye which goes to show just how awesome the man is. Punk attacks with a flurry of kicks, and delivers a forearm to Edge. Knee to the gut from Punk gets a one count, and from there he locks in a body scissor. Punk delivers a few knees to the mid section, but Edge comes back with a rollup for two. Punk comes back with a right hand, and a kick for a two count. Edge regains control with a forearm, but Punk is back with a backdrop sending Edge to the apron. Punk delivers a baseball slide sending Edge to the floor, and Punk is outside after him firing him right back in. Punk charges at Edge, but runs into the boot of Edge which goes to the injured eye. The ref checks on the injury as we head to break

Back from commercial with Edge in control. Punk is right back with another flurry of kicks, but runs into a flapjack from Edge for a two count. Edge grabs a double arm chicken wing, but Punk gets an arm free and elbows out. Edge hits the ropes running into a spinning heel kick from Punk. Enzaguri connects for Punk getting a two count. Punk goes for a double underhook, but Edge counters into the Edgecution DDT for two. Edge sets up for the spear, but Punk catches him with a spinning neckbreaker for two. Punk springboards off the top, but misses and Edge again goes for the spear. This time Punk catches him with a powerslam for two. Punk hits the running knee in the corner, and goes for the bulldog. That is countered by Edge, but Punk answers with a GTS attempt. Edge slides down the back, and rakes the eyes. Punk crawls to the corner holding his eye, and tells the ref he can’t continue and the match is over. Didn’t like the ending, but least they continue the angle they started at The Bash with the eye injury, which doesn’t usually happen. Match was decent, but with Punk and Edge, it could of been lot better.

Winner: Edge (via referee stoppage at 11:05 shown)

-Josh Mathews asks Punk after the match if he would have forfeited if this were a title match, and he responds by saying he can’t wrestle if he can’t see. He says when hes’ better he’ll give Edge a rematch. Great stuff.

Overall Thoughts: Solid show. Not good as it’s usually is, but still a good 1 hour wrestling show. Hope we get more Smackdown and less Raw on this show more often.

WWE Superstars Recap: 6/25/09

by Zack Danielson on Jun.26, 2009, under Superstars Recap, Television Reviews

I’m Zack Danielson, and welcome to another edition of my Superstars Report. On Tonight’s show, the main event will go to Raw, as Kofi Kingston defends the United States Championship against Matt Hardy and MVP in a triple threat match. So here we go:

Match #1. Jack Swagger vs. Evan Bourne:

-This should be a good opener. Bourne is still selling the rib injury suffered by Mark Henry with his ribs taped up. Swagger takes control early on with a go behind takedown, and then more amateur offense with a single leg trip. Swagger locks in a hammerlock, but Bourne counters into an armdrag. Swagger is right back ramming Bourne into the top buckle, but Bourne comes out of a throw attempt and delivers a low dropkick for a two count. Swagger throws Borune over the top rope as we take a commercial break. I hate a commercial break during an opening match.

-Back from break, Swagger has Borune locked in a waistlock. Bourne counters out, and then hits a low dropkick to the knees of Swagger. Bourne then hits a jumping clothesline. Bourne hits a kick off the second rope for two, and then kicks Swagger to the floor. Bourne goes out to the apron, and springboards off the second rope with a double knee to the face of Swagger. That was sweet. Bourne heads to the top rope after throwing Swagger back inside, but he gets caught and thrown off the top for a two count. Swagger goes for the gutwrench powerbomb, but Bourne counters into a hurracanrana pin for two. Bourne heads up top for the Shooting Star Press, but Swagger moves and Bourne lands on his feet. Swagger is able to clothesline Bourne from behind however, and deliver the gutwrench powerbomb picking up the victory. Nice opener, but knowing these two wrestlers, they could probably easily have a 4 star match with some time.

Winner: Jack Swagger (via pin at 8:45 shown) **1/2

- Dolph Ziggler comes out for the next match. Before the next match, he cuts a promo on his match with The Great Khali this Sunday at The Bash. Seriously, Dolph is a great wrestler, but does anyone seriously give two shits about this feud? Somehow, this match wound up on the PPV this Sunday instead of a John Morrison/Edge rematch.

Match #2. Jimmy Wang Yang vs. Dolph Ziggler

-Huh, didn’t know Yang still had a job in the WWE. Anyways, Match begins with a quick duck down and headlock by Wang. Ropebreak and cheapshot by Ziggler. Reverse exploder suplex by Ziggler for a two. Dolph goes for a neckbreaker, but it’s reversed into a backslide by Wang for only a one count. Ziggler then locks in some crossfaces and a chinlock. Elbows from Wang leads to a not so dangerous back suplex by Ziggler. Ziggler off the middle rope, countered with a dropkick by Wang. Wang now hits a corner leg lariat and holds on to the top rope. High cross body is reversed by Ziggler for only a two. Dolph crotches Yang and hits him with his yet to be name neck snap maneuver, which gets him the three count. Pretty much an extended squash, but it was a good one.

Winner: Dolph Ziggler (via pin at 2:52) *1/2

-After commercials, we get the Raw Rebound. Judging by the big rating it got, i could bet everyone reading this probably watched it. So I’m not gonna bother with this.

-Josh Matthews interviews Kofi Kingston. Kingston says a true champion should always be tested and when it’s all said and done he will still be your U.S. Champion. BOOM BOOM BOOM! Nice, solid promo by Kofi.

Match #3. WWE United States Championship Match: Kofi Kingston(c) vs. MVP vs. Matt Hardy

-This may not be as good as Smackdowns’ Superstars main events, but this will probably still be good. Matt attacks Kofi right at the bell and fires him to the floor leaving him and MVP to do battle. Matt clotheslines MVP in the corner, and hits a bulldog for a one count. Matt delivers a pair of knees to the face, but MVP comes right back with a throw. Kofi comes back in and he and MVP deliver a pair of forearms. Kofi hits a dropkick on Matt, as the faces both double-team him with a double vertical suplex. Kofi goes for the cover, but MVP makes the save and covers himself allowing Kofi to make the save. They have words before Matt pushes Kofi into MVP sending MVP to the floor, and allowing Kofi to get rolled up for two. Matt hits a swinging neckbreaker, and then drops a pair of legs on Kofi. MVP slides back inside, but gets met with a dropkick from Matt. Kofi rolls up Matt from behind for two, and then takes him over with a wristlock for two. Matt clotheslines Kofi on the top rope for a two count that is broken up by MVP who comes back inside. MVP sends Matt to the ropes, and a drop toehold gets a two count for him as we head to break.

-We’re back with Hardy in control after a double clothesline on both Kofi and MVP. Hardy hits a full body slam and elbow drop for two. We get a replay of a dropkick by Kingston on MVP that happened during the break. Monkey flip and dropkick gets a two count as MVP breaks up the pin. It appears this is where Matt Hardy was injured if true as he rolled to the outside in pain. MVP with kicks, knees, a flap jack and a knee drop on Kofi. MVP with a submission attemptl. Kofi with the jump over cross over back elbow. Kingston runs the ropes and Matt Hardy low bridges him and snake eyes him on the barricade. Knees and a neckbreaker gets a two count for Hardy. Standing elbow off the middle rope for Hardy. Reversal into punches by MVP. MVP with the HHH face buster and “Ballin” elbow drop for a two count. Kofi with a kick from behind as MVP goes flying out the ring. Boom Boom legdrop on Hardy and MVP breaks up the pin at 2. Crucifix into a sunset flip is countered by a low short clothesline by MVP. Side effect on MVP gets a two count for Matt Hardy. Kofi comes back with kicks to the face and a high cross body on Hardy. Leap into the corner and punches for Kingston on Hardy. Kingston charges to the other corner and is met with a Yakuza kick from MVP. Twist of Fate by Hardy on MVP. MVP kicks out as Kofi looks for the save. Twist of Fate is countered into the Trouble in Paradise for the 1-2-3. Great Main Event. It’s too bad about Hardy’s injury. Next thing you know, everyone will be calling him injury prone and he’ll be released by WWE.

Winner: Kofi Kingston (via pin at 12:00) ***1/4

Final Thoughts: A really fun show with everything you could ask for from an one hour show. Superstars continues to be a good show for the “wrestling” fan and I look forward to more weeks like this one. See you next week.

WWE Superstars Recap: 6/18/09

by Zack Danielson on Jun.19, 2009, under Superstars Recap, Television Reviews

I’m Zack Danielson, and welcome to another edition of my WWE Superstars recap. Tonight’s main event of Superstars goes to ECW for a change, since the main event usually belongs to Smackdown or Raw. Its going to be Christian and the Unified Tag Team champions of the Colon brothers against The Hart Dynasty of Tyson Kidd and D.H. Smith, along with their tag team partner for tonight, Jack Swagger. So without further of do, here we go:

Match #1. Chavo Guerrero vs. Santino Marella

-I’m pretty fine with this feud, as long as Vicki Guerrero and Santina are out of it. Chavo starts with a lot of offensive with double axhandles to the back of Santino. European upper cut from Chavo is followed up by a choke with the boot in the corner. Santino cartwheels out of a beal surprising himself, and hits a clothesline to comeback. Santino’s comeback doesn’t last long as Chavo hits a strong back suplex, but when he goes for the cover, he only gets a two count. Chavo locks in the abdominal stretch. Santino counters out with an armdrag, but Chavo is right back firing him into the second turnbuckle. Chavo charges at Santino, but Santino ducks seeing Chavo run head first into the top buckle. Chavo goes for three amigos, but Santino blocks the third and hits a suplex of his own. Santino goes to the top rope, but hilariously cant get his balance so he goes to the second rope instead. He dives into the boot of Chavo, who then cradles Santino to pick up the 1….2…3. Decent little comedy match, but when it comes to Santino wrestling, well if you’ve seen one of his matches, you’ve seen them all.

Winner: Chavo Guerrero (via pin at 4:00)*1/2

-We get a recap video of this past Monday’s three hour Raw. To sum it up, this episode of Raw had pretty good matches (thanks mostly to Smackdown), but still had shitty booking.

Match #2. Zack Ryder vs. Mike Williams

-I believe this is the first episode of Superstars with four matches. I can dig it. Ryder hits a hammerlock, and then rams Williams into the top buckle. Forearm from Ryder is answered by a dropkick from Williams. Williams hits a headlock takeover, but Ryder quickly counters into a back suplex. Ryder puts the boots to Williams, and then hits what amounts to a legdrop with Williams vertical. Ryder hits what looks like a one-legged codebreaker, and thats it. Matt Striker calls Ryder’s finisher “The Zack Attack”. Thats the best he could come up with. I would of called it “The Woo Woo Wreckage”. If you can up with something better for Ryder’s finisher name, please let me know.

Winner: Zack “Woo Woo Woo” Ryder (via pin at 1:41)*

Match #3. Eve Torres vs. Layla (Special Guest Referee-Maria)

-Well it looks like I’m one of the milli0n fools who actually thought this feud was over. At least Maria is looking hot tonight in that referee uniform. They start the match with a lockup. Some of the crowd is chanting “We Want Puppies”. Sorry guys, WWE is PG now. Eve has Layla in a armbar, and Layla is yelling to Maria she’s cheating. Eve nails a nice armdrag takedown, followed by a scoop slam. Layla comes back with a kick to the knee, but only gets a two count. Layla locks in a modified spinning toehold, and then drops an elbow on the knee. Layla delivers a kick to the hamstring, but Eve is able to kick away to Layla. Eve hits a pair of clotheslines and a dropkick. Suplex from Eve gets two, and they trade kicks to the head. Eve hits a running hand spring moonsault for the win. Finish was cool, everything else was crap. Maria wants a post match handshake between the ladies, and Layla actually obliges without the obligatory beatdown. Layla still doesn’t look happy about this, so this feud might continue. If it does, please shoot me.

Winner: Eve Torres (via pin at 3:45 )3/4*

-Special video package for Edge. I really hope they turn him face soon. As good of a heel as he is, he can also be a great face. Just look at his 2001-2002 career.

-They now show the ending to the Smackdown World Heavyweight Championship match that took place this past Monday on Raw. Jeff Hardy hit the Swanton on Edge, but CM Punk pulled him out of the ring and quickly went in and pinned Edge. It’s now going to be Hardy vs. Punk for the World Title at The Bash. Wait, theres a WWE PPV next Sunday?

Match #4. Jack Swagger and The Hart Dynasty (Tyson Kidd and D.H. Smith w/ Natalya) vs. Christian and The Colons (Primo and Carlito)

-I don’t think its possible for this to be a bad match, unless maybe if the Raw creative team was booking it. Match starts off with Carlito and David Hart. Carlito fires with some right hands and tags in Primo who comes in with a double dropkick for two. Smith comes right back to regain control and tags in Swagger. Primo hits a dropkick, and tags in Christian who hits a springboard sunset flip for two. Christian hits a back elbow off the second rope for two, but Swagger is back with a double leg take down for two. Kidd tags in and fires Christian into the top buckle. Tag to Smith who hits a dropkick for two, and delivers a big bodyslam. Smith dives off the second rope into boot and that allows Christian to tag in Primo. Primo hits a springboard crossbody for two, and then fires Smith to the floor. Kidd comes in, but gets backdropped over the top into Smith. Primo hits the ropes, but gets tripped up by Natalya. Oh that bitch. That allows Smith to come back in and regain control for the heels in the corner as we head to break.

Back from commercial with Primo still in trouble locked in a side headlock from Swagger. Smith gets tagged in and hits a spinning neckbreaker for a two count, and makes the tag to Kidd who delivers a dropkick for another two. Kidd locks in a front facelock, and makes the tag to Swagger who goes for a rollup by Primo is in the ropes. Primo bails to the floor, and gets a kick from Kidd for his trouble. Primo comes in with a shoulder to Swagger, and then jumps in with a sunset flip for two. He goes for the tag, but Swagger pushes him back to the heel corner. Tag to Smith who hits a powerslam for two, and then locks in a rear chinlock. Smith drives Primo into the corner, and makes the tag to Kidd who chokes out Primo with his boot. Primo hits the ropes and ducks a clothesline before both guys clothesline each other. Carlito tags in and delivers a knee lift to Kidd. Derailer from Carlito gets a two count, and that brings in Smith who gets a dropkick. Swagger attacks Carlito from behind, but gets chased to the floor by Christian. Primo clotheslines Smith outside, and Carlito catches Kidd with a backstabber after ducking a springboard clothesline for the win.

Winners: Christian, Primo and Carlito (via pin at 9:00 shown)**3/4

Overall thoughts: Decent show. Definitely a step back from previous weeks , but main event was pretty good, so in a way it saved the show from being bad. I’m also fine with the 4-match formula. Reminds me of Sunday Night Heat from back in the day.

WWE Superstars Recap: 6/11/09

by Zack Danielson on Jun.11, 2009, under Superstars Recap, Television Reviews

Welcome to another edition of my WWE Superstars recap. Tonight’s main event is John Morrison vs. Chris Jericho, and that should be a tremendous match tonight. Without further of do, here we go:

Match #1. The Bella Twins (Brie and Nikki) vs. Beth Phoenix and Rosa Mendez

- We start things off with the divas tonight. Remember when the divas division in the WWE used to be pretty good with women like Lita and Trish Stratus. Anyways, Rosa starts with Nikki and grabs a side headlock, but Nikki armdrags out and rolls up Nikki for two. Tag to Brie and a double armdrag gets two. Rosa gets shot to the Bella corner and monkey flipped out. Beth eventually gets a tag and double clotheslines the twins. Beth misses a corner charge allowing Nikki to tag in, and she comes in with a pair or dropkicks. High elbow from Nikki sets up a drop toehold to the bottom rope. Nikki hits an X-Factor, but Mendes distracts the official. Brie pulls her off the apron, but the time allows Beth to hit the glam slam and thats it. Better then the typical divas match seen on Raw actually.

Winners: Beth Phoenix and Rosa Mendes (via pin at 3:25) **

-They air a video package of Kofi Kingston. JAMAICAN ME CRAZY MAN! Really liking the push he’s being given.

Match #2. Evan Bourne vs. Zack Ryder

-Always great to see Evan Bouune on WWE TV. God I hate Ryder’s new theme. Match starts with some stalling from Ryder. Borune gets the advantage with a few arm locks early on. Ryder gets an eye poke on Bourne to gain some leverage. Ryder starts to work of Evan’s ribs, which Mark Henry injured on this week’s ECW. Borune gains back the advantage with a standing leg drop. Borune goes for the shooting star, but Ryder blocks it as we go to commercial.

Back from commercial, Ryder hits a flapjack on Borune. Ryder once again works on the ribs as he locks in a body scissors submission. Borune reverses it into a one-legged Boston-Crab. Ryder gets out of it and hits a big clothesline. Bourne is able to hit a dropkick and a hurricanrana. Ryder seems to have a bloody ear. After some struggle, Bourne is managed to hit the shooting star press for the win.

Winner: Evan Bourne (via pin at 9:10 shown) **3/4

Match #3. John Morrison vs. Chris Jericho

-Jericho bails to the floor after Morrison gets the better of a lockup. Back inside Jericho grabs a headlock, and hits a shoulderblock. Jericho hits the ropes, and runs into an armdrag from Morrison. Jericho hits a forearm to come out of an armbar, and then rams Morrison into the top buckle. Morrison fights back with a forearm, and then hits a heel kick. Armdrag from Morrrison allows him to go right back to the armbar. Morrison grabs a double leg takedown, and then goes back to the armbar. Jericho gets a right hand off the corner break to gain control, and then hits a kneelift. Jericho rams Morrison into the buckle again, but runs into a boot in the corner. Morrison hits a clothesline sending Jericho over the top rope. Morrison proceeds to hit a corkscrew splash over the top rope. Morrison tries to springboard back inside, but Jericho gets to the ropes to knock him off as we head to break.

We”re back from commercial. Jericho slingshots Morrison under the bottom rope. Jericho has the upper advantage for most of the match now, until Morrison is able to break free from a double arm chickenwing. Morrison hits a dropkick, and goes for the moonlight drive which is countered by Jericho. Morrison comes right back with a tornado DDT for two, and then whips Jericho to the buckle. Charge at Jericho comes up empty, and Morrison gets hit with a running bulldog. Jericho goes for the lionsault, but comes up empty. Morrison hits the “flying Chuck” a springboard spinkick for two. Jericho comes right back with a codebreaker attempt that misses, and Morrison answers with a running knee to a seated Jericho for two. Jericho hits a heel trip and goes for the Walls, but Morrison counters. Jericho charges into the corner, but misses allowing Morrison to go up top for Starship Pain. Jericho moves out of the way of that and goes for the Walls again. Morrison counters into a rollup for two, but Jericho counters into a rollup of his own and with a handful of trunks gets the three count. Damn good match. Please more Smackdown main event on Superstars.

Winner: Chris Jericho (via pin at 12:50 shown) ***3/4

Thoughts: Another damn good show tonights. There are a few replays of this show throughout the weekend, and I highly recommend checking it out just for the Jericho/Morrison match.

WWE Superstars Recap: 6/4/09

by Zack Danielson on Jun.05, 2009, under Superstars Recap, Television Reviews

Yup its me, Zack Danielson again. You see, after having a conversation with Jerome about a week ago, it came to my attention that Pro Wrestling Ponderings didnt have a reporter for WWE Superstars. So I volunteered to recap it until someone new joins PWP and does it. Haven’t seen to many episodes of Superstars, so im really interested to see what show has to offer. So here we go:

- I love the opening video for Superstars.

Match #1. Goldust and Hornswoggle vs. THE Brian Kendrick and Jamie Noble

Why is Hornswoggle wrestling in the ring? At least Jamie Noble is back on WWE TV. Kendrick is still trying to find THE partner and I think these two would be one hell of a team. Kendrick and Goldust start the match, with Dust getting the early offense. He tags in Hornswoggle and Kendrick just shoves him down. Kendrick tags in Noble, but Noble doesnt want to hit Hornswoggle so he tags back Kendrick in. Didnt Noble have a grudge against Hornswoggle about two years ago? Anyways, Hornswoggle eventually tags in Golddust and Golddust gets a lot of offense on Kendrick again. Noble comes in, but Dust sends him to the floor. Hornswoggle does a senton right onto Noble out on the floor, while in the ring Kendrick goes for the Slice Bread on Goldust, but Goldust counters it with a suplex. Dust tags in Hornswoggle, and he hits the Tad Pole Splash onto Kendrick for the 1…2…3. Once again, Brian Kendrick not only doesn’t find THE partner, but he jobs to a midget again.

Winners: Goldust and Hornswoggle (via Pin at 3:38) *

-We get a recap video of the John Cena/Big Show feud. Does anyone seriously care about this feud?

-The ECW Champion Christian is on commentary for our next match.

Match #2. David Hart Smith (with Natalya and Tyson Kidd) vs. Tommy Dreamer

-This will be Tommy Dreamer’s last televised WWE match if he loses in the triple threat match this Sunday at Extreme Rules. Dreamer gets early offense in the match, which included a slap to the face and a nice neckbreaker. Dreamer then clotheslines D.H. outside of the ring and hits him with a diving drop kick. D.H. mouths off to Christian and Tommy hits a flying clothesline off the apron. D.H. eventually gets the upper hand on Dreamer when Dreamer missed an elbow drop. D.H. had control over the match for a few more minutes until Tommy was able to lock in a Texas cloverleaf. Natalya tries to slide a chair into the ring but Christian is there to put a stop to that. That distracts the referee though long enough for Tyson Kidd to slide in and deliver a big boot to Tommy which allows Smith to pick up the pin at 8:45. Fine Match, but Dreamer losing the match was tough since this will probably be his last WWE match on television.

Winner: David Hart Smith (via pin at 8:25 min) **1/4

-We get a preview video of the Jeff Hardy/Edge TLC match for this Sunday’s PPV. Now this was a great video package that actually got me hyped up for their match.

- Chris Jericho comes out and cuts a prematch promo, stating he’s the ultimate superstar in the WWE. He also bragged about beating up Rey Mysterio last week on Smackdown. God,  I love Jericho’s promo work.

Match #3. Chris Jericho and Dolph Ziggler vs. R-Truth and Jeff Hardy.

- I like the team of Ziggler and Jericho much better than the team of Ziggler and Mike Knox. Ziggler and Hardy start off the match with Hardy throwing Ziggler outside and hitting him with a diving drop kick. The heels gets the advantage as soon as Jericho knocked Hardy off the apron. Jericho tags in and suplexes Jeff. Hardy clotheslines and tags in Truth. Truth comes in with a bunch of flips and hits a kick for the two count. Hardy tags back in and hits a whisper in the wind for another two count. Ziggler comes back in and goes for a suplex, but Truth turns it into a cross body for yet another 2 as Jericho breaks up the pin. R-Truth clotheslines Jericho over the top and to the floor, and then hits a tope to take Y2J out of the action. Back inside Hardy hits the twist of fate on Ziggler, and that sets up the swanton bomb for the 1…2….3. Great main event.

Winners: Jeff Hardy and R-Truth (via pin at 11:30 min.) ***

Final Analysis: Great show overall. Started off bad, but at least they managed to end it good. Superstars, just like ECW, is a great one hour show since they dont have to take too much time to build to PPVs and feuds. Its just an one hour show filled with wrestling, which I enjoy very much.  Superstars has more wrestling then Raw these days. I would say Superstars has officially become my 3rd favorite wrestling TV show (Number two is Impact, Number one is Smackdown). I’ll be back next week for another recap of Superstars.
