This Week in Wrestling

Welcome back to the best column not only on Pro Wrestling Ponderings, but on all of the internet. Yeah, I’m that damned cocky.

Zane Thornsberry:

Undoubtedly, we’ve all heard about the Kurt Angle arrest by now. If you haven’t, Kurt was arrested for stalking his girlfriend Rhaka Kahn, driving on a suspended license, and a few other charges. While any other time this might not be that big of a deal, it’s happening during a crucial time for TNA. Not only is Kurt Angle the TNA World Champion, but he’s also trying to gain more control of TNA. As you all may know, Jeff Jarrett and Karen Angle are now “an item”, which has infuriated Kurt beyond belief. Kurt has went to Dixie Carter (majority owner of TNA) to get control of the booking staff away from Jeff, and give it to Kurt. In response, Dixie Carter has fired Savio Vega, and Dutch Mantell who were two guys close to Jeff and in the “inner circle” of TNA. After these firings, Vince Russo is said to be worried for his job as he too is a close friend of Jeff.

Now while the firing of Russo might be a good idea, it’s certainly not a good idea to support a man whom is self destructing (Angle). Having him as your champion is not only bad publicity, but bad for business if he dies or gets incarcerated. It’s been reported that several TNA wrestlers have went to Dixie asking her that if she fires Russo, to hire either Paul Heyman (former booker/owner of Extreme Championship Wrestling), or Gabe Sapolsky (former booker for Ring of Honor). Dixie has reportedly been saying that she does not intend to hire either man, but instead someone with a Hollywood background.

Of course, hiring someone with a Hollywood background is not the best move for a wrestling company. For one, the majority of the time these writers don’t know a thing about the business or the product they’re getting into. If they do know what they’re getting into, it’s still not going to do the company any good as they don’t know what works and what doesn’t in wrestling due to them never having drawn a dime, or worked closely with a booker.

It seems that the days of one man being in charge of “the book” of a company is on its way out. People who couldn’t cut it in the tough world of Hollywood, and are now looking for a paycheck are replacing it. Ultimately, it’s not just the company, who suffers, but all the wrestlers, their families, and the fans.

If TNA wishes to be taken seriously by the world of Professional Wrestling, then they need to cease trying to become a carbon copy of WWE, and instead strike out on their own unique path. Instead of several writers fromTV shows that got cancelled because the writing sucked (or who got let go because THEY sucked), have a few older guys in the business work on the creative staff. They need to have one guy who knows what he’s doing (someone like Jim Cornette, or Raven) at the head of the booking team, with everyone else doing what he dictates.

TNA needs to get back to the basics in every aspect. Instead of doing complicated, unfunny, boring feuds, they should be doing easy to follow feuds with a clear-cut reason why they’re feuding, and not have it be over some “therapy” sessions. Enough of the zany characters, enough of the over the top gimmick matches, and enough of the tag team matches for a singles title. Get back to what brought you to where you were, and that’s good old-fashioned wrestling. If they do this, they’ll undoubtedly pull in more wrestling fans, and be able to break even (or turn a profit) each and every month.

When it boils down to it, TNA is a wrestling business. Therefore, they should focus on the wrestling, and not “comedy” skits. All I’m saying is you don’t see Ben & Jerry’s (who make a fine product) selling health insurance do you? No, because they know Ice cream is their thing, and they need to stick to that. Will any of what I said happen? Who knows, we’ll have to wait and see. However, if I were a betting man, I wouldn’t put my money on it.

Jerome Cusson:

Still can’t believe we’re so close to Summerslam. I think the card looks like decent, but it just doesn’t feel like the second biggest show of the year is coming in a week. WWE spent the week in Canada, and they made their distrust of the country very clear. First on RAW, they had Sergeant Slaughter teasing the crowd all night and Jericho turning on his home country. Then on Smackdown, they edited out the many cheers Tyson Kidd and D.H. Smith received before the main event. If I lived in Calgary or Edmonton, I would never ever want to see WWE again. Why spend 50 bucks on seeing a show when I’m simply going to get picked on for two hours. Pass.

TNA threw a Pay-Per-Show and I think about six people cared. None of which were the Pittsburgh police department as they arrested Kurt Angle for a bevy of crimes. I can’t his insanity and drug use are unexpected, but the most shocking and appalling thing of all was TNA letting this man keep their world championship. There is no excuse, not one that justifies TNA allowing Angle to keep the championship. I know we’re all innocent until proven guilty, but this man has shown erratic behavior so many times. TNA has an obligation to not only take the belt off Angle, but to out and out release him. The time has come for TNA to actually grow a set of balls and dump him. Enough of Angle’s garbage. Enough of Jarrett’s garbage. Hell, throw one Vince Russo under the bus too. Start fresh with a new booker and see what can be salvaged from this situation. Of course, I don’t expect TNA to actually show any courage because they certainly haven’t the last seven years.

Finally, we got some more bad news about the financial situation of Ring of Honor. Despite the fact that Ring of Honor made some money for a few years, they’re on the verge of complete destruction. See, the key to a lot of wrestling organizations is the ability to make money. It’s easy to exist when an energy company is propping you up, but it’s a far tougher proposition when you’re a small business. I’m hoping the ship is set right at some point, but the farther away we get away from Gabe, the less likely it seems there’s any hope for this company.

On a positive note, CHIKARA’s YLC VII looks to have been one of the more exciting and unpredictable weekends of the year. Big props to Player Dos for winning the whole thing and with all the numbers of tag teams appearing ready to split, I’m intrigued to see what happens with Dos and Uno and if any tension arises. Boy, CHIKARA has been the best company of 2009. Amazing how that works.
Chris GST:
This week/weekend was full of great events and some fantastic wrestling if you knew where to look.  From AAW, Hybrid Wrestling (affiliated with DGUSA), ROH, and CHIKARA’s annual Young Lion’s Cup.  Obviously there were some stellar matches coming out of all these events and I’m damn sure that the DVD release of the YLC will be as huge as the KOT was earlier this year.

The ROH tv tapings have come off with some smatterings of disappointment, but with a hopefully televised Aries vs Danielson for the World Title plus the other great main events, I’m pretty sure the tv product will end up being stellar.  A few things I didn’t like were the Aries World title matches against ROH students.  Obviously in place to show that there are no glass ceilings and yet it’s a wasted spot as truly the students can’t shine against the world champ otherwise the World Title itself gets bogged down in the process.  Not the greatest move, but we’ll have to see how the product comes across.

We have a YLC champion in Player Dos.  I predicted that Player Uno or Lince Dorado would take the whole thing.  I guess I was off by a number.  From the sound of it, the matches were incredible and I can’t wait to buy the DVDs that are sure to be on sale soon.  Hopefully with a SMV sale to top it off.  All I can say is hopefully El Leonino realizes that CHIKARA might be too big for him at this time as Grizzly Redwood made short work of him according to many reports and which didn’t come off as all that impressive.

AAW and Hybrid Wrestling also had some great matches this weekend on Aug 15th.  Be sure to keep an eye out on these indy feds as they have direct ties to DGUSA and also showcase talent from major indy federations.

Other then that, the stupidity of Kurt Angle is the only other story that buzzed me this week.  His stupidity and obvious hypocrisy is incredible and while I will never take away from his abilities in the ring.  Outside the ring he’s a complete mess and truly needs to hire a PR agent stat.

Justin Houston:

A new Young Lions Cup champion was crowned, and his name is Player Dos. On Night One of Young Lions Cup VII, Dos had to get past tag partner Player Uno and survive Soldier Ant’s last minute onslaught and pin him with a frog splash in a Six-Man Eliminator. In the main event of Night Three, Dos had to take down The UnStable’s Colin Delaney in the YCL finals to capture the prestigious prize. That makes Dos only the second man to ever hold both the Campeonatos de Parejas and Young Lions Cup trophy, Hallowicked being the first. Whether this means a break from the Super Smash Brothers team or not, only time will tell. Some fans are already clamoring for Player Uno to team with the newest form of Create-A-Wrestler: Dasher Hatfield, an old-timey base-brawler.

UltraMantis Black got some bad news in the form of a visit from…well, no one is quite sure. After losing a Four-Team Tag Match, Mantis was visited by a man dressed in all white wearing a white ninja hood. He had a message for the leader of the Order of the Neo Solar Temple: “The war is coming.” On that same night after the show, both Soldier Ant and Green Ant were sporting new white masks. What this means is still up for debate, but it all seems to stem from UltraMantis Black taking possession of a lost artifact known as the Eye of Tyr, which he used to brainwash and control Delirious. The man in white isn’t the only one who has shown interest in UltraMantis: a man named Vökoder has been seen in the crowd watching The Neo-Solar Temple’s matches, and he made his in-ring debut as a surprise entrant into the YLC. All this leads to one conclusion: UltraMantis is in big trouble.

There are now three teams with enough points to challenge for the Campeonatos de Parejas currently being held by Amasis & Ophidian: The Osirian Portal. On Night One of the YLC Fire Ant and Soldier Ant defeated 2.0 to earn another shot at The Portal, who previously defeated the Colony with the belts on the line at Revelation X. In defeating The North Star Express, The Roughnecks of Brodie Lee and Grizzly Redwood earned their first shot at the tag belts. Finally, Chikara veterans Icarus and Gran Akuma, two-thirds of F.I.S.T., earned their chance to become the first two-time champions by rolling up UltraMantis Black on Night Three in the above-mentioned Four-Team Tag Match. Whether this will lead to a Four-Team Tag Title defense, or each team getting a shot, the Osirian Portal should have a rough couple of months on their hands.

Never Kneel before the Altar of Conformity is the latest Chikara show out on DVD. The DVD is twenty dollars with some shipping, and you get a ton of bang for your buck. Go buy it and thank me later with a series of gentle hugs. Warm, gentle hugs. Mmmm…
